Afterpants: Afterlives (Ghost reunion AND Go into the light)
I'll be covering two afterlife story tropes today.
The first is "ghost reunion ending" wherein several deceased characters in stories have followed the progress of a living character and are waiting for/or directly influence the characters' success and reappear, standing together as ghosts to congratulate or affirm that success a la 'ghosts of Jedi' hanging out smiling.
While the afterlife is a solitary place but there are some exceptions. This trope is normally only used in modern storytelling and is therefore:
The second and more dreadful is "go into the light" wherein a person is said to die and see a 'tunnel of light' (sometimes said to contain feelings of "love" or dead relatives urging the person forward)
While there are numerous accounts of this happening to persons experiencing NDE's, it is this is a predominantly Western/Christian based phenomenon. The underworld (and most paths to gain access therein) are dark...dark....dark. Persons seeing a tunnel of light are almost certain to have generated the experience themselves. While the generation of this experience may make it no less valid for the individual, "going into the light" is not...I repeat NOT a design of the underworld itself. Therefore, this idea is also:
